Technology
and Internet Law
Back in ancient
history, before the Internet became everyone's everyday habit, there
were no Internet lawyers. There were business lawyers and trial
lawyers, etc. who occasionally dealt with some of the new issues
raised by the Internet.
Today, lawyers are more and more called upon by their clients to
answer integral business questions, and like the Internet, they want
it fast.
Questions began to
emerge like, "Can someone in New York sue me because of something
on my web site which is located in California? How is jurisdiction
determined? The growth of Internet start-ups and the venture capital
that funded them, brought up questions like "How can the
financial partners have enough control without interfering with the
growth of the enterprise?"
Trademark and copyright infringement became major issues. Because so
many legal needs came from the traditional business structure, the
first lawyers who had to deal with these issues were corporate
lawyers. e.g., reviewing licensing agreements, Web hosting contracts,
and employee stock-option plans).
